Chocolate for breakfast is a treat, and can come in many forms. Chocolate chip pancakes I love, Nutella over toast, a hot mocha coffee, or a hot coco. Not all of these are healthy, or even reasonable in calories. I’m a huge fan of chocolate donuts in the morning, but we won’t go there. But, there is a way to make a healthy hot-chocolate smoothie that tastes great and is low in calories. Don’t believe it?
The fruit smoothies are the standard, but it’s good to be creative once in a while. You can enjoy a warm healthy smoothie breakfast at just a little over 300 calories that is chocolaty and delicious. It’s called an Oat Chocolate Smoothie!
So here’s what we’ve got in the Oat Chocolate Hot Smoothie:
Dark chocolate – Check the label, go big on flavor not on sugar.
Rolled Oats – Adding some fiber, and nutrients, but you won’t be chewing them up (if you blend them right).
One banana – Bananas can be high in calories, but the flavor really pops. One whole small banana, or half a large one is fine.
Almond milk and Almonds – Very creamy, flavorful, more nutrients, and added protein.
Flax seed – A bit of ground flax seed enriches this smoothie with some awesome vitamins, nutrients, and more protein. And, you probably won’t know it’s there!
This is a simple recipe, if you have all the ingredients handy. For the blending, be careful of pouring heated milk into your blender as it may not be heat resistant. Otherwise, easily done if you often make other smoothies.
Enjoy this in the morning, or afternoon, on a cold winter day.
- 0.5 oz dark chocolate chopped
- ¾ cup unsweetened almond milk
- 1½ tbsp rolled oats check the brand for gluten free if required
- 1 ripe banana
- 8 almonds (handful)
